Catch an International Thief

November 15, 2018

Essen SPIEL is the world’s largest event based around table-top gaming; held over four days in Germany.  Tons of game companies come from all over the world, both big multinational ones and small family run ones.  It is usually a great time for all but this year six small companies had money, products, and personal items stolen.  One person was arrested but his accomplice who had the goods was not caught.  One of those companies to be hit was Japanime Games, who had $10,000 in cash stolen along with some electronics and personal items.  They are running a quick fundraiser to recoup the loss.

Everyone who donates will featured on a “Wall of Fame” with the names of the supporters and some thank you gifts for some donation levels.

For $10 you will be mailed an “I Love Japanime Games” patch and a pack of Tanto Cuore: International promo cards.  For $25 you get the patch and cards also get a free copy of Kemomimi Panic with promo cards.  For $50 you get the patch, cards, game, and a Tanto Cuore: international foil pack and pack of 10 Arisa promos with foil Arisa.  Donating $100 gets you the patch, Tanto cards, game, Arisa cards and one special limited edition SPIEL steins and Anja oversized cloth playmat/towel.

You can donate on their site or via PayPal.  Any money over the goal will be given to the five other companies that were stolen from.  They have already raised over $5,000 over their goal with no end date for this fundraiser.  You should still get your money in soon though.

This is a chance to help out a company that brings out great games and pic up some limited items for yourself.

You can read more about the robberies here.

Press Release: English Edition of Cooperative Japanese Dungeon-crawler Testament Coming to Kickstarter This Winter

October 21, 2018

In 2019, Japanese board game localization studio LionWing Publishing will be publishing the English version of the hit Japanese dungeon-crawling card game Testament. From designer Yasushi ‘Kuro’ Kuroda—creator of Unicornus Knights, Ars Alchimia, and Alicematic Heroes—Testament is a fully cooperative, card-based dungeon-crawler that features deep character customization, tactical battles, and tough boss fights.

Taking inspiration from MMORPGs, and in particular, Final Fantasy XIV, Testament’s core design is built around the “trinity” system found in such games, which emphasizes party combat roles like tanks, damage-dealers, and healers.

In Testament, players team up and control individual heroes to battle through six stages, first fighting through smaller monsters and then facing off against a massive stage boss that mimics the complex “raids” for which MMORPGs are best known.

Testament comprises six stages in total, with each one taking about an hour to complete (if the players’ party isn’t wiped out completely, that is) and provides players with the ability to play single, one-off scenarios or string several together to create a campaign, with characters leveling-up after the completion of each stage. Testament supports up to four players but can be played entirely solo as well.

Do beware, however: the game’s level of difficulty is not for the faint of heart. In fact, Testament is so punishing that less than twenty percent of players will clear all of its stages on their first attempt, with many failing on the very first stage. If they can survive long enough, though, they will fight the game’s final boss, the man-made god known simply as Testament.

A Kickstarter for the English edition of Testament is set to launch this coming winter before its planned release next year. A presskit has been created to allow for a closer look at the game’s features and its components .

Last Chance Tanto Cuore: Winter Romance Kickstarter

September 13, 2017

Japanime Games and Archlight Games is back with another Kickstarter.  This time with Tanto Cuore: Winter Romance, the maid deck building games adds butlers to the mix this time. The expansion adds to previous versions of Tanto Cuore.  New rules and cards allow you to create couples with maids and butlers to earn more points or you can try to break up other players couples.

Now with the original goal of $20,000 met long ago, not only will you get the game (plus plenty of bonuses items based on your pledge), but there are a whole bunch of stretch goals already met.  Meaning free stuff added to your pledge.  These include a metal pin, alternate are and text cards, and cardboard tokens for use.  There are still three stretch goals to meet for more alternative cards and promos.

Add-ons for this project include card sleeves, sets of Tanto Cuore (comes with free tote bag), extra Winter Romance sets, foils cards, acrylic token set, randomizer deck, deck boxes, playmats (oh so many playmats), calendar, spin-off two player game Doki Doki Beach Volleyball, and artbook,

You have less than one day to get in on this project, cause I procrastinate too much about writing.  With the addition of butlers this expansion feels a bit more welcoming than past sets.  Free shipping in the US.

There is also a buy one get one free offer on playmats going on at the Japanime store through the end of September.

Love Formula by Japanime Games

June 30, 2017

Japanime Games with Gwin Games is bringing their next project to Kickstarter, Love Formula.  They have developed new mechanics and playable promos from a previous print and play version of the game along with over sixty pieces of new art.

Love Formula is a card drafting game for two to four players trying to create the perfect date for your favorite couples, while sabotaging the dates of the others.  Score points by setting up the best dates, but be aware of catastrophes.  Read more about the rules online.

Reward levels for the project start at $25 for a copy of the game and a promo; $45 comes with the game, two promos, and a playmat; at $100 you get all that plus a signed poster, two other playmats, and three sets of card sleeves.   At $300 levels lets you customize a card for the game with your likeness or reference photo and you can make a suggestions for the card effect.  Get this for all games or for your personal use, even get a couples card of yourself and your significant other.

Add-ons for the project are additional copies of Love Formula and three packs of card sleeves.

The project was able to meet their initial goal in just four hours and several of their stretch goals.  So far unlocked are a yuri couple, a yaoi couple, and round counters to keep track of turns.  The next goals are Heart Tokens to use as counters and reminders for certain cards ($12,000) and a new part-time job card at $14,000.  More stretch goals to be revealed as others are met.

Shipping costs for all the levels and add-ons are very reasonable.  At least I think they are.

The project has 19 days to go to completion so you have some time to decide if you want to join in.  To me looks like a nice game to play with friends or your special someone.  A lot less fan service than some other games out there.

Press Release: Two New Champions Crowned at Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series Pittsburgh

May 22, 2017

Pittsburgh, well-known for its championship professional teams, welcomed two new champions this past weekend as hundreds of passionate fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG competed for the top prize at Yu-Gi-Oh! CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (YCS) Pittsburgh. Hosted by Konami, this premier-level event featured many of the top Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG players and enthusiastic newcomers. Duelists met their peers and displayed the skills and strategies necessary to win prizes and make lifelong friends. YCS Pittsburgh crowned two new Champions, Aaron Furman and Dragon Duel top finisher Justus Long.

Participants of every age and ability displayed spirited Dueling in the early rounds of Swiss Format Dueling on Day One. On Sunday, Furman, from Linwood, NJ, learned that his Zoodiac Deck proved its worth as he triumphantly marched toward a Finals showdown. Starting with several rounds of Swiss, followed by more Single Elimination rounds, he squared off against Wen Tong Xiang, from Montreal, Quebec, using a Zoodiac Speedroid Deck in the final playoff.

In addition to bringing home the title of YCS Champion, Furman received a special set of prizes that included the new YCS prize card, an Ultra Rare Number 93: Utopia Kaiser, a YCS Championship Trophy, the new YCS Top Cut Game Mat, a PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, 32 World Qualifying Points*, and an invitation and paid travel to his 2017 World Championship Qualifier (WCQ) tournament!

*The number of World Qualifying Points is awarded based on the final standings. For example, if there are 32 WCQ invites, the Duelist who comes in 1st place will earn 32 points, the 2nd place Duelist will earn 31 points, and so on.

Additionally, there was a tremendous amount of excitement in the Dragon Duel tournament (an event for Duelists born in 2004 or later) where attendees witnessed an exciting series of Duels between Long, from Xenia, OH, using his Metalfoes Deck against Connor Perrotta, Lee Center, NY, in the finals. Long displayed great sportsmanship and a winning combination as he beat Perrotta to snare the title of Dragon Duel Champion. He picked up some great prizes too, including a Dragon Duel Championship Trophy, a Regional Deck Box, a Dragon Duel T-shirt, a 2017 Regional Game Mat, and an invitation to his 2017 Dragon Duel World Championship Qualifier.
