ENnies 2016

July 21, 2016

From the ENnies website: The Gen Con EN World RPG Awards (the “ENnies”) are an annual fan-based celebration of excellence in tabletop roleplaying gaming. The ENnies give game designers, writers and artists the recognition they deserve. It is a peoples’ choice award, and the final winners are voted upon online by the gaming public.

The ENnies were created in 2001 as an annual award ceremony, hosted by the leading D&D/d20 system fan site, EN World in partnership with Eric Noah’s Unofficial D&D 3rd Edition News. Since they were originally conceived the ENnies have expanded from an Internet-based awards selection to an annual award ceremony at Gen Con Indy. The ENnies have also branched out from their roots as an award ceremony focused upon d20 system publishers and products to celebrate the achievements of all tabletop RPGs and the publishers and products that support them.

With award categories recognizing the components that make a game great to the types of products fans have come to love, categories for fan-based websites and much more, the ENnies are the best way for fans to acknowledge outstanding effort from and to say “thank you” to the publishers, designers and artists who make this hobby great.

This year Kotodama submitted their translated Kickstarted backed RPG Ryuutama to this year’s awards.  It has been nominated in Best Cover Art and Best Family Game.  Others games related to this blog are King of Slimes (Best Free Game) and Cubicle 7 who puts out Kuro (Fan’s Favorite Publisher).  Other categories to vote in include: Best Adventure, Best Aid/Accessory, Best Blog (of which I am not nominated), Best Electronic Book, Best Miniature Product, Best Monster/Adversary, Best Podcast, Best Rules, Best Setting, Best Software, Best Supplement, and more.

You could vote for any nominated game at the voting booth.  It is completely free, no login required, and you do not have to vote for all categories, just the ones you are familiar with.  The voting goes to the midnight tonight, so hurry and sorry this took so long to get up.  Winners will be announced in August at GenCon.

Origins Game Fair and Otaku Hobby Gaming

May 30, 2016

Orgins Game Fair is this June 15th through the 19th at Columbus Convention Center in Columbus.  It is one the largest gathering of gamers and games in the country and they have some anime/Japanese themed games and events for all.

Last year they started Anime themed programming by partnering with Wasabi Anime, local anime conventions, and others.  This year they have expanded that programming.  There will be panels, screenings, workshops, a manga library, and more.  They will have events Thursday through Saturday only though.  They have the use of three rooms for events and the library.  Special events include an Anime Name That Tune game show, Trulie Awesome Show (an anime inspired comedy duo), and playing anime games with the maids of Cafe Peitet Joy.

The Special Media Guests for this year’s con are two anime voice actors, Darren Dunstan and Wayne Grayson.  Darren has voiced on Yu-Gi-Oh! (Pegasus), the 2003 TMNT (Splinter), Chaotic (Kaz), and several other 4Kids productions along with doing voice direction for a number of series.  Wayne has done voice work for over 20 years, his best know work though is Yu-Gi-Oh! (Joey), Utena (Ruka), Samurai Deeper Kyo (Benitora), and the 2003 TMNT (Michelangelo).  The two of them will only be there for Saturday and Sunday, helping to judge the costume contest, holding a Q&A, and a signing on Saturday.  On Sunday they will be in the Konami area of Battelle Hall all day.

Bushiroad, Pokémon, and Konami all have plenty of tournaments going on, all different styles and sizes.  Special promoted ones include Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series Origins to win a prize card “Minerva, the Exalted Lightworn”, Pokémon Unlimited Tournament celebrating 20 years of Pokémon and Pokémon TCG Win-a-Trip Tournament to go to the 2016 World Championships in San Francisco, Cardfight!! Vanguard G Team League Spring Fest 2016 Regial Qualifer, Weiss Schwarz Neo Showdown Spring Fest 2016 Regional Qualifier, and Future Card Buddyfight Buddy Challenge Spring Fest 2016 Regional Qualifier.

There are a few RPGs with anime themes.  Kuro from Cubicle 7 has three different sessions to play, all starting at 8am though.  Plus some Big Eye Small Mouth sessions, fantasy and post-apocalyptic ones.  Windmill Game Co is running several sessions of their game Advanced Dimensional Green Ninja-Educational Preparatory Super-Elementary Fortress 555 (ADGNEPSEF555), which is designed as a free for all anime inspired game where anything should happen set in a school.  They will also have game of it based around wuxia and henshin heroes too.

For those interested in LARPS there are some anime themed ones.  The Pokémon company’s LARP is just having you challenge other players with your 3DS or 2DS and a copy of X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire to collect gym badges to then beat the Elite Four and the Champion to win a prize.  It goes on all day on Thursday through Sunday.  Not really a traditional LARP unless you put some character into, which I think would be a lot of fun.  A more traditional LARP is ADGNEPSEF555: The Movie!! The LARPening!!! on Sunday starting at noon.  Inspired from the above RPG.

On the miniature side of things we have some unique items.  One man has modified rules from other games to make his own Starblazer’s space game (two sessions) and Area 88  fighter plane game (one session).  Cool Mini or Not has some “miniature figure board games” to check out too.  Arcade Quest about playing a guild of heroes fighting evil, Rivet Wars a sort of WWI battle with cute and wacky figures, and Kaosball a fantasy sport league.  Plus Super Dungeon Explorer and Ninja All-Stars from Ninja Division.

Board throughout the long weekend include Kitsune: of Foxes and Fools (the only game actual using the Anime track listing), Lanterns: The Harvest Festival Tournament, King of Tokyo games, Hanabi, and Samurai Spirit.

There will also be videoing too.  Pokémon handheld, Mario Kart, Pokken, Smash Bros, Street Fighter, and a retro game challenge tournaments are all planned.

Early Bird registration pricing ends tomorrow, so sorry this is so late.  Ribbons, generics, and event registration will not be available online.  Badge Registration will remain open through the show though.

This is a con for all fans of gaming to check out at least once.  Though it can get a bit expensive of five days.  I will actually be at this one.  I have not been for a few years so I am excited for it.

Shinobigami – Modern Ninja Battle Tabletop RPG from Japan

December 6, 2015

Kotodama Heavy Industries, who have already crowdfunded and translated Japanese RPGs Tenra Bansho Zero and Ryuutama, are now looking to bring over the RPG Shinobigami God of the Shinobi by Adventure Planning Service from Japan.

Shinobigami is designed as a one session RPG with possibilities of reusing characters for future games.  The game features six warring ninja clans with their own goals and abilities, yet have to work together for the game.  Each player will have their Secret to deal with as well.

The core rule book will contain the rules for play and a replay (or an entire session of play) written in screen play format printed in format similar to a volume of manga and has everything you will need to play the game.  They will also release a supplement/advance rule book as well in the same format.  It will include extra charts, sub-clans, rules for “normal humans”, and more to add variety to your games.

They are also working on expansion material for the game that will be coming out a well.  These include new scenarios to play, full color quick play guide, a Weird West reskin of the game, theme run scenarios, guidebook to writing scenarios, a behind the scenes book with interviews with the creators and translators, printer-friendly versions, Roll20 package, and print and play cards.  The highest level of backing gets you a limited edition version of both the core book and supplement book.

Instead of just dollars for expansion goals, they are looking for actual number of backers even if they back at lower numbers, so that the more who back the more the backers.  The first backer milestone at 1,00 Backers was release with a reskin of the game with everyone as magical girls, a second set of three interconnect scenarios, and ten new and unique ninja character illustrations for the game.  At 1,5000 Backers they will create a one player one GM game set in a noir setting.  At 2,000 Backers they will release a 1800’s Regency Era setting and one where everyone is a different phase of David Bowie’s career.

It looks like a fun game to play.  They are way pass their goal so this project is a go, but they only have a little over 1,100 backers.  Meaning they have a way to go before you can play as David Bowie.

The Whispering Road: A Miyazaki-inspired Tabletop RPG

January 28, 2014

Another Kickstarter project.  This time a RPG inspired by Miyazaki and Ghibli films called Whispering Road.  A simple and easy to use system that the creator wants to release with a full color art book, done by Kaitlynn Peavler.  The goal has already been meet, but this looks like something for anyone who is interested in simple story games.

The game has you pick an archetype, a need, and some traits then you are ready to go.  Uses a simple d6 or d8 conflict resolution method, with traits giving  you more dice to roll.  The game also has you building up karma, both good and bad.

The backer levels are few but straight forward, nothing big or flashy.  Give $5 and you get the full color PDF.  Give $20 and get both PDF and book.  For $35 you get two copies of the book along with the PDF, and for $75 you get a total of five books to share with friends and players along with the PDF. Also, since the rules are already done, once the Kickstarter ends everyone gets a no-art PDF the next day.
Two stretch goals have already been made.  The game book will now come with a sample of game play and four sample characters with art of them.   More goals are at $6,000 a quick start guide PDF to give to players will be made; $7,000 sample fantasy settings to use as inspiration with art, and at $7,5000 archetype cards and trait cards with custom art on each one. It is currently at (of this writing) $5,840.
Release date is schedule for April of this year, unless the art is late.  The book will be 8″x8″.  So come on people back this so I can see the sample fantasy worlds PDF goal.

Press Release: Maid: The Role-Playing Game and Star Line Publishing

January 6, 2014
Beginning in 2014, Star Line Publishing will be taking over handling Maid: The Role-Playing Game in English. Maid RPG is a slapstick anime comedy RPG, and an earlier work by Golden Sky Stories designer Ryo Kamiya. Andy K originally took the lead role in the business of publishing the game, while I handled most of the translation and otherwise took a back seat. With Andy moving to Japan and my own publishing venture getting up and running, it made sense to switch the game over to SLP. For the time being we’ll be treating Maid as a “long tail” product, making it available primarily through PDF and print on demand venues, though we’ll still be able to offer printed books at conventions and to interested retailers. We’ll be expanding to a few new POD/PDF sales channels as well, notably DriveThruRPG and Amazon’s CreateSpace (which will in turn make it available for order through Amazon), though given that Maid RPG has gotten and stayed disturbingly high on their sales charts, we’ll definitely continue the partnership with Indie Press Revolution that Andy started.
Whether there will be anything new for Maid RPG depends a lot on what we have the resources to accomplish and what people express interest in. I do plan to eventually complete and publish my Retail Magic game (a comedy RPG based on the Maid RPG rules, but about employees at a magic item shop), and I might go as far as to look into finally putting together a book of original Maid RPG material, and possibly a cheaper and slimmer introductory Maid RPG core rulebook similar to products like the Explorer’s Edition of Savage Worlds. If there’s something you’d like to see, let us know!

Tokyo Brain Pop

December 30, 2013

I talked about Panty Explosion looking for a new name and it has one now, Tokyo Brain Pop.  Which does feel right for what this game is about so I approve.  Though do they mean “pop” as in popular or “pop” as in the sound of your head coming off?

TBP blue cover

It is the same psychic school girl, or whatever scenario you create, RPG by Atarashi Games that it was before just with a less controversial name.  It is still rules lite with a focus on storytelling and characterization.

– Describe your Best Friend’s triumphs and your Rival’s failures as you drive the story forward using simple and engaging narration rules!

– Kick Demon ass with the sword that houses the soul of your murdered step-mother, struggle to control your unstable psychic powers or unleash your murderous fury on the boy who dared to reject your love confession! Details, Goals and Psychic Powers let you bring plenty of anime flavor to your games!

– Suffer the emotional trauma of Japanese high school with rules for Popularity, Best Friends and Rivals and plenty of opportunity for betrayal and humiliation!

– Includes special instructional manga pages that help teach you how to play!

–  Tons of information on demons and monster, the daily life of students and the dreaded Japanese educational system!

– Packed full of color illustrations and manga!

– For 4-6 players, for Teens and older

– 52 full color pages

You can order the physical book for $16, $10 for the PDF, or both in a bundle for $23 to save $3.  Books will start to ship after January 1st.

Read the instructional manga to learn a little more about playing the game.  Look for it further down the page.

I am just going to stick with my copy of Panty Explosion Perfect though.  Tell new players I will call it Tokyo Brain Pop though.

Ryuutama Kickstarter

December 5, 2013

Ryuutama is an original Japanese heartwarming tabletop RPG of travel and wonder.  The game was designed by Atsuhiro Okada.  In this game you take on the role of what would normally be an NPC in a village and set off on an adventure through a fantasy world.  The game’s nickname is “Miyazaki’s Oregon Trail.”

There is a Kickstarter set to translate it, plus some material from the French edition of the game, and release it over here.  It has already reached its goal, but that does not mean you should not join in.  In fact it means you should join in even more.

For $15 you will get the PDF rulebook in full color.  For $25 you get the Plus Plus level with PDF and all extra supplemental materials for the game, forever.  $40 gets you a physical copy and PDF.  $50 is the physical copy Plus Plus level.  $190 adds a character illustration by one of the two original artists for the game in black and white (an extra $40 for color).  $250 gets you a sketch of a full scene of your description.
There is also a special level for brick and mortar retailers.  Everyone who gets the PDF or higher gets their name listed as a supporter in the book and a text only version of the game as soon as the Kickstarter ends.

You can also add an extra physical copy of the book onto your level for $40 at no additional shipping.

Instead of regular Stretch Goals for this Kickstarter they are doing “Milestones” where they announce goals achieved after they have been made instead of telling you how much before the next level.  This is to prevent things from getting a little out of hand and putting too much on pressure on them.  Everyone who backed at a Plus Plus level will automatically get everything in the new level.  So far they have past third Milestones.

New Name for Panty Explosion

September 26, 2013

Panty Explosion is a role-playing game about psychic school girls.  You play a schoolgirl from Atarashi High School with destructive psychic powers who do battle against ghosts, demons, and anything else you come up with.  The game is very flexible allowing you to play things other than schoolgirls and can be used for just about any kind of setting.   The game got a redesign in 2012 and was renamed Panty Explosion Perfect.  The game was created by Jake Richmond and Matt Schlotte for Atarashi games.   It has sold thousands of copies all over the world and translated into multiple languages.

Though many people have complained about the name, feeling it sounds kind of dirty.  Saying the game mechanics and ideas sound cool but the name turns them off.  Really it is a silly reason in my opinion, it is only dirty if you make it.  To fix this problem they have decided after seven years to finally get a new name.

Panty ExplosionVS

To decide the new name they are having a contest open until October 8th.  You get to suggest your new name for Panty Explosion Perfect .  The creators will pick their favorite suggestion and use it as the title of the new edition.  The winner will get their name on the book’s credit page, a signed copy of the new book, and an original illustration of the feature school girl characters from the game.

To enter, post your name and suggest on the comment for the contests post here.  Duplicate suggestions will go to the first person to suggest it.  Suggestions are already coming in so get yours in before someone else suggests it.

Panty Explosion Perfect will stay in print under its old name.  The new name version will exist side by side with it and will have the same content just different titles.  You can pick up the game book for $16 or PDF for $7.

Two New Games From Cel*Style

May 30, 2013

Cel*Style a site for indie designers role-playing games created specifically to capture the beauty, intensity and strangeness of manga and anime.  They have recently gotten two new games for everyone to play and enjoy.  One yuri based and one yaoi based.

GxG (Girl x Girl)

Tomoe is a Freshman at the prestigious Atarashigawa Academy, an exclusive Catholic boarding school for girls.  As her Seniors vie for her affection, Tomoe finds herself torn between them as old rivalries are exposed and grudges flare up. Will Tomoe be able to make any lasting friendships, much less fall in love? Help guide her through three outings to see if romance will blossom!

Designed by Michael Wight and continuing the line of games of GxB and BxB.  GxG is the yuri romance version that uses a simple card based mechanic.  You can buy it at the Cel*Style store for $10.

Hot Guys Making Out

Hot Guys Making Out is about the relationship between Honoré, a former nobleman, and Gonsalvo, his ward. They are both gorgeous and have the hots for each other. Also pretty often there are other people trying to kill them. It is set in a remote village in the Pyrenees during the Spanish Civil War (1930s) but you don’t have to know anything at all about the history or setting to play.

This one designed Ben Lehman is a one for fans of sexy guys loving on each other and dramatic gaming.  Another simple and easy system that let’s you play a game in just 1-2 hours.  It can be played as either a single session or as on going chronicle.  You can play as the premade characters or create you own.

You can get the book for $13 or the PDF for only $6.

Both look like fun for those wanting games more focused on drama and romance than just combat.  Also for yaoi and yuri fans.
